About Bridgwater Hill Walking Club

Bridgwater Hill Walking Club club for hill walkers who live in Bridgwater and surrounding areas.

How will walkers be supervised?

This depends on the experience of the group. We believe that all groups should be adequately supervised and we would rather cancel an event than takes risks with people's safety. Beginning walkers (or those who are nervous about walking without a leader) will walk with an experienced leader. Those with some experience and who are able to navigate properly will be checked at various points along a walk but will not necessarily have one of the leaders with them. Experienced walkers who are under 18 will be checked at various points and experienced walkers who are over 18 will be allowed to go without supervision on the walk, although leaders may choose to track their progress anyway. In bad weather greater supervision will be provided for all groups. Group leaders will carry mobile phones to call for support quickly if it is needed.

Are there any age restrictions?

The club is aimed at people between 14 and 25 but if you enjoy hill walking then you can still join and get involved. In particular we will need experienced walkers to help lead the group. All leaders will have to be Safeguarding checked and trained (we will arrange all this). We will also arrange some family walks from time to time so it will be worth staying in touch if you want to get your family walking.

Where will we be walking?

We will be walking locally - sometimes through Bridgwater itself. We intend to go as far as we can (depending on we can fit it all in). The Quantock, Exmoor and Dartmoor will be the focus of most of our more strenious walks.

Why should I go hill walking?

Hill walking is really enjoyable. You get to walk in places that few people ever see. Hill walking has been proven to be excellent for good health and general well being - it is an excellent stress buster. Walking is one of the best ways to lose weight and get fit. Hill walking will also push you beyond your usual boundaries and can be very challenging and hence rewarding.

Who is behind the club?

The club is being started by Rev Chris Brown (a Methodist Minister). Chris is Walking Group Leader (WGL) qualified under the national MLTE scheme. The club is managed by Bridgwater Methodist Church.
